In 2013, Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius, 36, killed his girlfriend of four months, Reeva Steenkamp, 29, on Valentine’s Day in their South African home. In 2016, he was jailed for 13 years and five months.

As per South African laws, prisoners are eligible for parole after serving a majority of their sentence, and after ten years behind bars, Pistorius began the process to apply for parole.

According to Steenkamp’s family lawyer, Tania Koen, “I can confirm that parole has been denied, they will reconvene in a year to reconsider him again and we don’t know the reasons yet [for the denial]. I’ve just received a call from the parole board… It is a huge sense of relief for June [Steenkamp].”
