Martin Scorsese’s 2010 thriller Shutter Island could be adapted into a TV series for HBO.

Shutter Island Series Headed To HBO

HBO and Paramount are teaming up to make the Shutter Island TV series a reality, according to Deadline. The series, which will be a prequel, will take its title from the name of the asylum in Scorsese’s film – Ashecliffe. The plot of the show will go into the history of the hospital where Leonardo DiCaprio’s character gradually loses his mind.

Denis Lehane, who wrote the book that Scorsese based his movie on, will write the pilot for the TV show. Scorsese is slated to direct the pilot.

Scorsese has been working with HBO for the last several years as an executive producer on Boardwalk Empire. He’s also set to produce and direct a pilot about the 1970s world of rock music that will star Boardwalk Empire actor Bobby Cannavale and is as of yet untitled.

Shutter Island proved to be a powerhouse at the box office, pulling in $125 million, while also receiving mostly positive reviews. It was told from the perspective of World War II veteran-turned-federal marshal Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio), who is investigating the disappearance of a patient of the hospital's that had been admitted for murdering her three children.
