Bear Steals Dumpster From German Restaurant [Video]
If the bear in Colorado keeps returning the the German restaurant, it could be put down
A bear, who was clearly very hungry, made off with a dumpster from the back of a German restaurant in Colorado Springs – a chow heist that was caught on camera.
It was early in the morning on Wednesday when the Bruin decided to see what could be foraged from behind the Edelweiss Restaurant. After sniffing around in the recycling container, the bear ambled over to the garbage bin and seemed to be satisfied with the loot. On his hind legs, he proceeded to slowly back away with the bin, rolling it 50 feet into the parking lot where he tipped it over to feast on his dumpster findings.
"There's some fresh, really good food" attracting the bear, Edelweiss manager Dieter Schnakenberg told the Denver Post. "She passes up the recycling bin and goes right for the good stuff." The German eatery's signature dish is rouladen, which is steak pounded and stuffed with bacon, mustard, onions and pickle before it's rolled up and covered with brown gravy.
Apparently, the 6-foot-tall bear enjoyed the meal, as he returned on Thursday morning for seconds. The bear has also been spotted trying to feed off the contents of other garbage bins in the area – both commercial and residential.
Though the bear’s theft of the dumpster makes for an entertaining video, if the restaurant isn’t able to deter the bear by chaining down the dumpsters or locking the lids, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife division will have to step in. "It creates a very dangerous situation, mostly for the bear," their spokesman, Randy Hampton, said. "None of it ends well for the bear."
If the bear continues to frequent Edelweiss, wildlife officials will tag the bear and relocate it. If that doesn’t work, it could be euthanized.
