Todd Grinnell and Isis King, who both star in the show With Love, discussed trans visibility and the development of their relationship on season two of the show in their new exclusive uInterview for LGBTQ Pride Month.

Grinnell, who plays Dr. Miles Murphy, explained how their relationship has evolved between seasons one and two.

“We started season one as we did in the relationship like we’re getting to know each other and it was all kind of new and there was a lot of learning and growing,” he told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “And so in season two we really see the evolution of the relationship and we get into more, I think, even more honesty between Miles and Sol. But ultimately the love, I think, strengthens even more throughout season two and Miles brings Sol more into his, you know, life.”

King’s character, Sol, has a different perspective on season two. She describes how Sol introduces Miles to her family dynamic.

“You see Sol bring Miles to all of the big family gatherings and we know what their relationship is like but what happens when you add the family dynamic to it?” she said. “So you kind of see that played out in how conflict that might happen with the family affects Miles.”

While there is more chaos and the relationship does face some challenges, King explains, “I like to think that Sol and Miles always apologize and make each other happy by the end of the night.”

King reflected on what it’s like to be a trans actor on the show and what are the advantages of this new trans visibility that the show introduces.

“Oh, I would say that the advantage is visibility, you know, for me but also for my community to be seen as a whole person, to be seen as someone whose worthy of love from family, friends and a relationship as well as juggle a whole career which we never get to see for a trans character,” she said.

She acknowledged that there is a challenge being a trans actor as there aren’t, “many roles like this let alone that many roles for trans people to play someone that is fully fleshed out and developed and I just hope that it encourages more of that, for sure.”

Grinell offered his own perspective on the issue. “Gloria Calderón Kellett, whose our showrunner and creator, and the rest of the staff do an amazing job of really getting into these storylines and particularly our storyline in a really authentic way without pulling any punches and just get in there and have conversations that we have never seen on television before and so it’s incredible to be a part of that,” he said. “We get to see a person who thinks they’re evolved and heart’s in the right place actually go, you know what I don’t know everything.”

When asked about their favorite scenes, both the actors agreed that they loved the scenes where the whole cast was involved. King specifically mentioned the scene where the engagement takes place.

“Without spoiling anything, I love the engagement. I just think you know the whole family was there and it was a beautiful moment and I may or may not have cried every single take,” she said.

With Love seasons one and two are currently streaming on Prime Video.
