VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Virginia Madsen Reflects On Working With First-Time Director Nicola Peltz Beckham On ‘Lola’

Actress Virginia Madsen spoke about her experience working alongside first-time director Nicola Peltz Beckham on the drama series Lola in her exclusive new uInterview.

Lola, released on February 9, focuses on a young woman (played by Peltz Beckham) as she struggles to save enough money to save herself and her younger brother from their toxic home.

When asked about the journey Madsen’s character, Lola’s mother Mona, goes on through the story, Madsen told uInterview founder Erik Meers, “Mona is a sad, abusive person who is not walking through life; she’s stuck. She’s stuck in hate and resentment and real loneliness. She thinks her daughter is a terrible person, she has disdain for her own child. And her little boy, her youngest, she’s afraid that he too will go down the path of sin, and so she’s trying to correct him because she believes she’s saving his life by turning him into a ‘real boy.’”

Madsen spoke on her inspiration for such a troubled character, “I had a really solid script that explained a lot of things about Mona, like her inner pain, instead of just making the baddie… you have to play the why, you have to make her a real personality.”

On her relationship with Peltz Beckham, Madsen said, “On the set, she knew this was going to be really difficult for me. Sometimes things had to be really quiet, and she would make sure that I felt really protected, even if I was being awful in my scenes with her. And at the end of the day, I’d be like, ’Nicola, can I just please hold you for a moment? I’m really sorry.'”

Madsen emphasized, “She’s very very good as an actor. So when she’s looking at me and I’m railing at her and being horrible – I just wanted to burst into tears. So at the end of the day, she would indulge me and give me a chance just to hug her so that I could feel better and drive home.”

In further assessment of her character, Madsen said, “I think that I’m watching my daughter… have the same kind of damage that happened to me… I had to feel a certain amount of focus, calm, protection, while on the set, and Nicola gave that to me.”

In 2018, Peltz Beckham spoke to uInterview exclusively about working with Alex Pettyfer on his film Back Roads.

“Alex was an amazing director to work with,” Peltz told uInterview. “He did trust me in a way where it felt amazing as an actor to feel like you could be on a set and take risks and just give it your all, and like they said, just leave everything out there. When you’re on a bigger film, sometimes you don’t get the privilege to do things like that, so that was amazing.”
