Pretty Little Liars‘ star Troian Bellisario teamed up with actor-turned-producer Chris Pine in Doula, an indie comedy, that follows soon-to-be parents Deb and Silvio. When their midwife unexpectedly dies, Silvio hastily hires the midwife’s son to step in.

Bellisario, who plays Deb, recently sat down for an exclusive with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss the unconventional portrayal of pregnancy in the film.

“When you think about birth as a crisis, your understanding of yourself and your identity is thrown up in the air and it is being reassembled as you’re growing this human being inside of you,” Bellisario said. “You can’t use your body for things that you used to use it for. You are not a sexual being in the same way that you were before. You’re not interacting with your same relationships or your job. Everything is changing.”

The actress revealed how her experience being pregnant helped her connect more to the realness of the script and her character.

“For me, my experience of being pregnant as a woman was a scary time,” Bellisario shared. “It wasn’t like a lot of film and television and social media presents pregnancy which is like, ‘Oh it’s so beautiful. It’s just me and my bump and I’m loving every minute of it!’ It’s like, ‘No! I might not be loving every minute of it. I might actually be so lost and confused in all of this and not know who I am or how I’m going to be a mom and that scares the s–t out of me.’ That’s what I loved so much about this script. It validated that part of it for me.”

Doula is now available to stream on ROW8, Redbox, Prime Video, VUDU, Vudu Movie & TV Store or FlixFling on your Roku device.
