VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Maika Monroe On ‘Villains,’ Bill Skarsgard & Kyra Sedgwick

Villains, a horror-comedy film starring Maika Monroe, has quite an intriguing premise.

The film, which was written and directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, is about two young amateur criminals who break into an older couple’s suburban home in the hopes of stealing a car and quickly become entangled with their intended victims, who harbor a dark secret. Monroe, a 26-year-old actress known for her role in films like Labor Day, It Follows and Independence Day: Resurgence spoke to uInterview exclusively about her role in the film, the experience on set and her famous co-stars, which include Kyra Sedgwick, Bill Skarsgard and Jeffrey Donovan.

Monroe and Skarsgard — who is best known for playing Pennywise the Clown in 2017’s It — play the amateur thieves Jules and Mickey, respectively, while Donovan and Sedgwick portray the couple whose house is broken into. Monroe raved about the script of Villains, saying she immediately adored the dynamic between her character and Skarsgard’s.

“When I read the script, I fell in love with Mickey and Jules and their relationship,” said Monroe. “Bill’s incredible,” she added of the Swedish actor and brother of Alexander Skarsgard.

Monroe revealed one particular attempted robbery scene near the beginning of the film was one of her favorites to shoot.

“One of the first scenes in the movie is us robbing a gas station and we have these crazy masks on and we had so much fun filming that,” she said. “Because also with these masks, we can’t really see what we’re doing or where we’re going so we’re like bumping into things but it kind of worked.”

Monroe also said she learned much from the directors of Villains and said the atmosphere on set made her feel at ease.

“It was a really safe environment where we could explore and do crazy things,” she said before adding that acting in a comedy was “new” for her until the experience of working on this film.

Villains premiered at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas in March. It will be released nationwide on September 20.
