VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Magnum PI’s Jay Hernandez On Reuniting With Dennis Quaid 20 Years After ‘The Rookie’ For ‘The Long Game’

The new film The Long Game follows the true-life story of five teenage Mexican-American caddies who wanted to learn how to play golf. They created their own golf course in the South Texas desert and, without formal training, managed to compete and win against wealthy teams in the 1957 Texas State High School Golf Championship. 

In an exclusive interview with uInterview at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, Jay Hernandez, who starts as the boy’s coach, discussed what he wants the audience to get out of the movie.

“Maybe it’s a golf movie but there it’s so much bigger than that, you know,” he began. “It’s a story about perseverance, it’s an underdog story, it is a great sports movie but at the end of the day, you know, you got to get people invested, you gotta get people worked up, and you got to get the tears flowing and the heart beating and racing and everything. I think it has a lot to offer. I think people are gonna be, you know, sort of surprised by what they see.”

Hernandez also revealed what it was like working with Dennis Quaid again after 20 years.

“Me and Dennis did The Rookie together like 20 years ago and he was my coach in that film and I was playing like the kid,” he said. “It’s funny, it’s just like this full circle moment and here I am doing this movie and he’s like now my assistant coach in this film, so it’s pretty great.”
