VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Jamie Lee Curtis Explains How ‘White Privilege Gets A Good Comeuppance’ In ‘Knives Out’
Knives Out may seem like just a modern take on the Agatha Christie-type murder mystery genre on the surface, but Jamie Lee Curtis is convinced it makes strong statements about deeper sociopolitical issues that are very topical in contemporary America.
The actress explained to uInterview exclusively how she believes her new ensemble film — which centers on a detective who investigates the mysterious death of the patriarch of an eccentric family — addresses sociopolitical disagreements that often transpire between conservative and liberal family members today. She added that Knives Out makes some insightful points about race relations and shows what the ramifications of white privilege are.
“White privilege gets a good comeuppance,” said Curtis of the movie. “There’s plenty of red meat and blue meat in this movie. During that family squabble, a lot is thrown at each other and in the center of the movie is really love.”

The actress went on to add how she believes nearly every movie has political commentary because art is intrinsically meant to challenge our opinions and preconceived notions about certain issues.
“There’s political commentary in Bambi,” Curtis said.
“Even in entertainment, you can still think a little. You don’t have to be brain-dead,” she added.
Curtis also described her character in Knives Out, Linda Thrombe-Drysdale — the youngest daughter of the deceased family patriarch played by Christopher Plummer — as a “self-made real estate maven.”
“She really looks down her nose at the rest of her family, who she feels have been sucking off the financial hookah pipe of the dead patriarch’s success,” Curtis explained. “But of course she has secrets of her own, as does every character in the movie.”
Knives Out — which first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival — is directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and also stars Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette and Lakeith Stanfield. It is now playing in theaters.
