According to a spokesperson from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell organization, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been asked to vacant their U.K. home, Frogmore Cottage.
“We can confirm The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
The confirmation comes after a tabloid published a report that King Charles III has asked the couple to give up their home and is instead offering it to his disgraced brother Prince Andrew, who stepped down from his royal duties in 2019 after his connection to Jeffrey Epstein was made public and sexual assault charges were filed.
Frogmore Cottage, located on the grounds of Windsor Castle, was given to Harry and Meghan by the late Queen Elizabeth II. They spent 2018 through 2019 renovating the cottage for about $2.9 million, which sparked outrage amongst U.K. taxpayers. It was later revealed that the renovation costs were repaid by Prince Harry.
While the couple has given up their royal duties and relocated to California with their two children, they still used Frogmore Cottage as their U.K. residence and stayed there during their return to attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.
Prince Harry had arranged for them to keep the house for “several years” after paying for the refurbishment.
The request to vacant their property comes after the January release of Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, where he shares very personal information about himself and the royal family’s private affairs. The book has further strained the Duke and Duchess’s relationship with the royal family and the chances of reconciliation seem slim, which may have encouraged the “eviction” notice.
