The Manhattan Theatre Club announced on Monday that Phylicia Rashad will be returning to Broadway to star as Faye in the original cast of Dominque Morisseau’s Skeleton Crew, directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson.

Skeleton Crew takes place in 2008 during the Great Recession and centers around three characters who work together at one of the last auto stamping plants in Detroit. Each of these characters is forced to make life-changing decisions if they are to lose their plant. MTC released the following description:

“With uncertainty everywhere, the line between blue-collar and white-collar becomes blurred, and this working family must reckon with their personal loyalties, their instincts for survival and their ultimate hopes for humanity.”

Rashad, who is known for her role as Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show, is no stranger to Broadway and her credits include The Wiz, Dream Girls, Into The Woods, Jelly’s Last Jam, A Raisin In The Sun, Gem Of The Ocean, A Wonderful Life, Cymbeline, Cat on A Hot Tin Roof, and August Osage County.

Rashad received a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in 2004 for her revival role for A Raisin In The Sun as Lena Younger. In 2005, Rashad was again nominated for a Tony Award for Gem of the Ocean as Aunt Ester.

In May of this year, Alumna Rashad of Howard University was appointed Dean of the reestablished Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts.

Opening night will be January 12, 2022, at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater.
