SN30 Pro & SF30 Pro Controller Review: Subtly Modernized Controllers

8Bitdo specializes in building video game controllers based on iconic controllers of yesteryear. However, although they visually echo controllers you fondly remember in design and layout, they are made to be played with modern hardware. 8Bitdo’s latest peripherals, the SN30 Pro and SF30 Pro controllers, are the latest in alternative gaming options.

SN30 PRO & SF30 PRO REVIEW

8Bitdo’s NES30 Pro and FC30 Pro controllers were modeled after those used by Nintendo’s 8-bit consoles, whereas the Bluetooth 4.0-endowed SF30 Pro and SN30 Pro likewise channel the controllers used by fabled Super Nintendo and Super Famicom. The primary difference between 8Bitdo’s two tributes are their colors; otherwise, they function like you’d expect them to, offering excellent ergonomics that are nearly identical to what you remember from Nintendo’s 16-bit controllers.

However, the SN30 and SF30 integrated plenty of advancements enjoyed by modern controllers. Two joysticks adorn the bottom of a SN30 or SF30, which in turn move their D-Pads and A, B, X and Y buttons marginally upwards. Plus, as with contemporary controllers, there are two left and right buttons, fulfilling appropriate inputs for modern titles. So, if you want to enjoy the Super Nintendo’s Super Mario Kart or the Switch’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a SN30 or SF30 will supply a comfy option.

Gaming platforms that are compatible with the SN30 and SF30 are Microsoft Windows, MacOS, Steam, Android and the Nintendo Switch. Moreover, 8Bitdo will continue to update the pair’s firmware. Other features accounted for are motion controls, rumble, a turbo mode and a USB-C input.

A SN30 Pro or SF30 Pro controller will cost $50. A USB-C cable and an instruction manual are included in the package. An optional accessory worth looking into for mobile gamers would be the 8Bitdo Smartphone Clip.
