Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced that singer-actress Pink will appear at the Academy Awards.

Pink, the Grammy-winning rebellious pop star, will be at the 86th Academy Awards in March, though the Academy did not explicitly say that she would be performing. This announcement comes on the heels of the news that Bette Midler would be performing in addition to the four nominees for Best Original Song.

The Academy is keeping the details of these performances secret, letting on very little in their official press releases.

“We are very excited to welcome Pink to the Oscar stage for the very first time. She is regarded as one of the greatest voices in pop music and one of the best performers of her generation and we are thrilled to have her join us for a highly anticipated moment on the broadcast,” said Zadan and Meron

It is interesting that the Academy titled the press release ‘Pink To Appear On The Oscars’ instead of ‘Pink To Perform On The Oscars.’ Pink herself declared that she had been asked to perform at the Oscars when she announced the news on Twitter.

In contrast, the press release regarding Midler’s Oscar news was titled ‘Bette Midler To Perform On The Oscars,’ and Zadan and Meron said that Midler’s performance would be “especially moving.”

The emotional context given to Midler’s upcoming performance suggests that she might be singing to accompany the In Memorium segment of the awards. Pink’s announcement is relatively devoid of clues as to what her role might be.

Perhaps she will perform her signature aerial stunts in host, Ellen DeGeneres’ opening number or monologue, or maybe she will play a part in the evening’s theme: Superheroes.

The 86th Oscars, hosted for a second time by Ellen DeGeneres, will air Sunday, March 2, 2014 live on ABC at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
