Bette Midler To Perform At The 86th Academy Awards
Bette Midler, veteran actress and singer, will perform at the Oscars for the very first time come March.
Oscar Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced that Midler would be performing on Wednesday, Feb. 19, but did not confirm what song she would be singing or what her performance will be for. Midler is not nominated for an award and all the singers nominated for Best Original Song are already confirmed to perform, so she will not be acting as a substitute.
Zadan and Meron are keeping the nature of her performance under wraps as of now, releasing only a short joint statement.
“We are thrilled to have Bette perform on the Oscars for the very first time. We believe she will make our Oscar telecast an especially moving evening,” Zadan and Meron said in the official statement.
The words “especially moving” could hint at the performance that traditionally accompanies the In Memorium segment of the Academy Awards Ceremony. Last year, Barbra Streisand performed her classic “The Way We Were” for the In Memorium tribute.
However, nothing has been confirmed as to the nature of Midler’s upcoming performance. Midler herself took to Twitter, confirming the news for her fans and asking for song suggestions.
The 86th Oscars, hosted for a second time by Ellen DeGeneres, will air Sunday, March 2, 2014 live on ABC at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
