Lucy Hale 'Road Between' REVIEW: 'Pretty Little Liars' Actress Delivers A Sweet, Honest Country Debut
4/5
Lucy Hale, who plays Aria Montgomery on ABC Family’s hit show Pretty Little Liars, released a country album titled Road Between on June 3. Fans of Hale and the show will be surprised to hear how incredible her music sounds.
Road Between is an instant hit, with catchy songs like the first on the album, “You Sound Good to Me.” In the chorus, Hale sings, “Baby, you sound good to me. Baby, you sound so good to me. Like a melody,” which sounds like lines people will be using as an Instagram caption throughout the summer. “From the Backseat” shows Hale taking a trip down memory lane. She provides listeners with a very visual song; one can picture Hale riding down a road in a car “sitting shot gun / sitting pretty and free.”
One of the most beautiful songs on Road Between is “Nervous Girls.” The song is about the struggles girls face and shows Hale’s fear of the what-ifs in life. She sings, “I’m beautifully strong and tragically confused,” which many people can relate to. “Goodbye Gone” is a song about a past partner who Hale wants to forget about in order to heal a heartbreak. This song surprisingly shows a harder side to Hale, which fans of Pretty Little Liars may be shocked to hear. However, Hale’s darker side comes as a pleasant surprise; she definitely means business when it comes to her love life and her music career. “Kiss Me” is another song about relationship problems and Hale’s desire to rekindle a past romance. This pop-country song is lighter than the rock-country “Goodbye Gone.” Though many of the songs on the album deal with the same ideas of love lost, Hale shows her various skills and range throughout the album.
The title track “Road Between” shows off Hale’s impressive vocal skills. The ballad is about Hale trying to find herself, but she is still “learning the road between.” In “Feels Like Home,” Hale shows how much she loves the comforting feeling of being home. She talks about feeling scared being on planes at the age of 16 and that she would disappear in “the big city.”
Hale’s album shows her range of vocals and musical styles, while also containing wonderful lyrics. Her words seem honest and people will definitely be able to relate to many of her songs. Hale discusses love, fear, and heartbreak, topics that will grab the attention of many. Road Between proves that Pretty Little Liar Lucy Hale is not just a pretty face; she has a bright future in the music industry.
