Yetis of folklore have a strong and dedicated band of believers, some of whom provided alleged Yeti hair samples that scientist Brian Sykes suggests provides answers to the age old mystery.
Yeti enthusiasts provided Sykes, a professor of human genetics at Oxford University, with samples they collected in the Himalayas, reported Discovery. By analyzing the DNA, Sykes came to the theory that the Yeti, commonly referred to as the "Abominable Snowman," might have some relation to Norwegian Arctic polar bears from 40,000 years ago.
Though the Yeti could be a direct descendant of the prehistoric polar bear, they are not related to the living Himalayan bears. Furthermore, Sykes believes that the Yeti could be a cross between the prehistoric polar bears and brown bears – giving it its unique appearance.
With Sykes research, those interested in Yeti folklore might soon get more answers regarding the origin of the mythic creature. He will present his yet-to-be published findings on Britain’s Channel 4 on Sunday.
