Willie Nelson Announces Performance For Texas Senate Candidate Beto O’Rourke

Willie Nelson has announced he supports Texas Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourkeand this is clearly not sitting well with many of the singer’s fans.

The 85-year-old country music star and Texas native revealed he will perform at a rally for O’Rourke — who is running against Republican Sen. Ted Cruz — in Austin on Sept. 29.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Nelson said O’Rourke “embodies what is special about Texas,” and a few fans backed the singer.

However, several others quickly denounced Nelson on social media.

Cruz and O’Rourke are locked in one of the most contentious Senate races this year. The seat Cruz is hoping to retain has been held by the GOP since 1993. O’Rourke, who will be 46 on Sept. 26, is a U.S. Rep. from Texas who previously served on El Paso’s City Council. Some have compared the young politician’s charisma to that of Barack Obama when he ran for president in 2008.

Nelson, who has recently been struggling with health issues, has long embraced progressive views on many issues like legalizing marijuana, supporting LGBT rights and animal rights.
