WATCH: ‘South Park’ Announces Hour Long Pandemic Special
South Park fans can now look forward to the show’s first hour-long special, which is devoted to the coronavirus crisis. A minute-long YouTube trailer released yesterday features snippets of the episode, including Randy Marsh’s pandemic special and the kids’ return to school.
The official episode description reads, “Randy comes to terms with his role in the COVID-19 outbreak as the on-going pandemic presents continued challenges to the citizens of South Park. The kids happily head back to school but nothing resembles the normal that they once knew; not their teachers, not their homeroom, not even Eric Cartman.”
Many fans in the YouTube video’s comments appear to be celebrating the show’s return, but on Twitter, where posters aren’t necessarily South Park subscribers, responses seem to be somewhat mixed.
South Park’s doing a pandemic special? Can’t wait to find out that sure maybe covid sucks, maybe people are dying, and maybe the long-term effects are scary and unknown, but it’s people who expect you to wear a mask or do anything different are worse and fear is the real plague.

Odds of me tuning in: about 80%. Odds of me turning it off and thinking… Yeah that’s too far. Over the line for me about 45 minutes in: about 95%.

So I assume Randy will be a pandemic profiteer, Kyle and his family will be overreacting germophobes, Cartman will pretend to take it seriously but actually just be playing along to avoid going to school, and the McCormicks will be anti-maskers and cause Kenny to die from Covid

With South Park‘s generally right-leaning messages and edgy humor, many viewers are concerned that the show will not take the dangers of COVID-19 seriously enough, and perhaps even encourage others not to social distance or wear masks. That being said, the special already seems to be garnering a massive audience, as the trailer video is #14 on YouTube’s trending with 21K likes and only 110 dislikes.
While the show’s 24th season premiere date hasn’t yet been announced, “The Pandemic Special” will premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 8:00 p.m, and will be available on HBO Max 24 hours after its premiere.
