WATCH: Robert Pattinson’s ‘Batman’ Screen Test Revealed

The Dark Knight is coming back to the silver screen sooner than you think.

The first look at The Batman, set to be out in 2021, has been released online in the form of a camera test for the Caped Crusader. The director of the film, Matt Reeves, posted the footage on his Vimeo page and his Twitter profile. The video is less than a minute long and consists of Batman, played by Robert Pattinson, standing in a red-lit room while a menacing score plays in the background. Not only is this the first look at the new comic book movie and Pattinson as the Gotham vigilante, it is also the first time people get to hear the film’s score from Michael Giacchino, the Academy Award winning composer of Up and Jurassic World. Giacchino has worked with Reeves before, when he wrote the music for his films Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The film is also set to star Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Jeffrey Wright and Peter Saarsgard.

The footage has attracted a lot of attention online. The clip has received over five million views on Vimeo and over 100 thousand likes on Twitter. The clip has also over six thousand comments on Twitter, and reactions have ranged from positive to negative. Many are excited for Pattinson to don the cape, but like when he was initially announced to play Batman, there are many on social media who are not excited for Pattinson’s inclusion in the franchise.

Much of the online complaints surrounding The Batman are less about criticizing Pattinson, but rather expressing disappointment that he is stepping into a role that Ben Affleck was initially going to play. Affleck was also going to direct the film, but he had trouble coming up with a version of the story that he liked, so he stepped down from the production.
