Neil Patrick Harris, 38, hosted for the third time at the 66th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday night, which was broadcast on CBS, and the How I Met Your Mother star opened up the Tony's by saying, "Welcome to the 66th Annual Tony Awards, or, as we call it, 'Fifty Shades of Gay.'"
Harris then proceeded to sing a number based on how life would be if it were a musical, hang upside-down from the ceiling in a Spider-Man homage, and do a mash-up of the nominated musical songs. Ricky Martin also showed up to sing his "And the Money Kept Rolling In" from Evita, in which he plays the Che Guevara character opposite Elena Roger as Eva Peron.
Hugh Jackman was honored with a surprise award for his charity work, in which he raised $1,789,580 for the Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS charity. Jackman's wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, presented him with the award. "She's never kept a secret in her entire life," said a shocked Jackman as he accepted.
The big winners of the evening included the musical Once, which took home eight awards, the play Peter and the Starcatcher, which nabbed five, and Bruce Norris' Clybourne Park, which won the Best Play Tony Award. Last year's big winner, Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Book of Mormon, also started out the night with a musical number that included later winner for Best Actress in a Featured Role, Judith Light, Matthew Broderick, and James Earl Jones.
