On Tuesday, Keke Palmer was participating in protests in Hollywood when she asked men in the National Guard to join her in the march. However, the men claimed they could not leave their post.
NBC News’ Gadi Schawrtz recorded and posted the interaction on Twitter saying, “Watch all of this.”
In the video, Palmer said to the men, “You have to understand what’s going on. We have a president who’s trying to incite a race war.”
She added, “We need you. So march with us. March beside us. You get your people. March beside us. March beside us. Let the revolution be televised.”
One man extended his hand to Palmer, but she replied, “No, no, no — let’s just do it. We start marching, and you march with us. Please.” The guard explained that he could not leave his post.
At this point a women chimed in and said, “Can you do me a favor? Can you take a kneel?” To which the man answered, “Absolutely.” Palmer responded, “I don’t know — that ain’t enough for me.”
The man and several other guards took a knee.
Protests have been occurring in major cities across the United States as a result of the death of George Floyd, a black man who was killed in police custody when an officer put his knee on his neck.
Palmer recently starred in Akeelah And The Bee, Hustlers and Berlin Station and has been active on her social media spreading awareness about the Black Lives Matter movement. In her most recent post she said, “There is a check and balance when it comes to a government and it’s people, we decide together no matter who we are and what we do, what side of history we want to be on. It can’t be government/authority over ANYTHING because sometimes… sometimes, going against authority is the only remedy for change. Where do you draw the line?”
