Jimmy Kimmel decided the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards was the perfect setting to prank the Twitterverse during his hosting debut. Here's how it went down: Kimmel asked Tracy Morgan to fake passing out stage. The 30 Rock star agreed to the stunt, but not before removing a set of nunchucks from his tuxedo and giving them to Kimmel. Kimmel then encouraged viewers to tweet "OMG Tracy Morgan just passed out on stage! Turn on ABC now!" to poke fun at those not watching the show. "Just lie there for about 10 minutes or so,” Kimmel, 44, told Morgan, 43. “And when people tune in they will see this on the stage."
Morgan remained "in character" on the floor as Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere of ABC's Nashville presented an award, and he stayed on the ground throughout the commercial break. When Morgan was finally taken off stage, he yelled: "Tell Kerry Washington I'm all right!"
The stunt proved effective. Twitter TV’s official handle responded to the influx of tweets they received. "OMG 25,000 tweets instantly thanks to OMG Tracy Morgan #Emmys — thanks @jimmykimmel !!" Many celebrities participated in the gag including Stephen Colbert (@StephenAtHome), Rosie O’Donnell (@Rosie) and Joel McHale (@joelmchale).
