Vanilla Ice, who’s real name is Robert Van Winkle, has reached a plea deal following his February arrest for an alleged robbery.
Vanilla Ice, 47, appeared in court in West Palm Beach, Fla., Thursday, where he reached a plea deal that will keep the rapper out of jail, reported Entertainment Weekly. Instead, he will complete 100 hours of community service for Habitat for Humanity and pay the estate of the late homeowner between $1,100 and $1,300.
If Vanilla Ice complies with the plea deal, the grand-theft charges levied against him will be dropped. The prosecutors have already dropped the burglary charges.
According to Van Winkle’s lawyer Bradford Cohen, the alleged robbery of furniture boiled down to a misunderstanding.
“This was a house owned by an estate. There’s a dispute where the furniture was,” Cohen told People magazine. “Police say it was in the property – the garage, the backyard, that type of thing. We would have disputed that if we went to trial, because it was on the curb. Rob didn’t have any criminal intent at all; this was a misunderstanding and the prosecutor knew that.
Cohen added, “We came up with a happy medium. We avoided the necessity of going to trial and letting a jury decide. It saved the state from having to put together a case that they might lose, and saved us from having to put together a defense.”
