San Diego high school students were given suspension punishments for twerking – a popular dance in hip-hop that includes hard-hitting hip and backside action. While Beyoncé is known to twerk quite a bit on stage, Miley Cyrus (pictured above) has also shown herself to be quite accomplished at the dance move.

Students at Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego were recently featured in a YouTube video performing the dance. The dance video featured mostly females dressed in leggings twerking in the high school's schoolyard with one another, and most impressively, upside down. When teachers came across the video on the video sharing site, they reported it. It's since been taken down.

A total of 33 students were suspended as a result, according to ABC 10 News. What's more, once their class suspensions are through, that might not be the end of their punishment. The offending students could also be banned from other school activities, including their prom and commencement ceremony.

The school does in fact have guidelines in place to prevent such suggestive dancing. They state that students at Scripps Ranch High School are prohibited from all "dance moves that may be considered sexually provocative or simulate sexual activity, i.e., grinding, freaking, dirty dancing." Incidentally, the newer dance trend of "twerking" is noticeably absent from the list.
