Trump Says He’ll Vote ‘Yes’ To Legalize Recreational Marijuana In Florida
Former President Donald Trump declared that he was going to be voting “yes” to legalize marijuana in his home state of Florida.
Florida’s Department of State announced in July 2023 that the submitted constitutional amendment to legalize recreational marijuana in Florida gained enough signatures to place it on this year’s ballot.
While medical marijuana is legal in Florida, a “yes” vote for Florida Amendment 3 would legalize the Schedule I drug for recreational purposes, allowing residents over 21 to possess, buy or consume up to three grams of marijuana recreationally.
However, growing the plant would still be considered illegal even if the amendment gets passed.
Under current law, possession of up to 20 grams of the drug is viewed as a misdemeanor offense and is punishable by up to one year in prison.
Prosecutors filed over 16,000 charges against individuals for possession of minimal amounts of marijuana in Florida in 2023.
On August 31, Trump went to Truth Social to share his support for marijuana legalization in Florida.
“As everyone knows, I was, and will be again, the most respected LAW & ORDER President in U.S. History,” he wrote in the post. “We will take our streets back by being tough & smart on violent, & all other types, of Crime.”
“In Florida, like so many other States that have already given their approval, personal amounts of marijuana will be legalized for adults with Amendment 3,” he added. “Whether people like it or not, this will happen through the approval of the Voters, so it should be done correctly.”
“We need the State Legislature to responsibly create laws that prohibit the use of it in public spaces, so we do not smell marijuana everywhere we go like we do in many of the Democrat-run Cities,” the former president asserted. “At the same time, someone should not be a criminal in Florida when this is legal in many other states. We do not need to ruin lives & waste Taxpayer Dollars arresting adults with personal amounts of it on them, and no one should grieve a loved one because they died from fentanyl-laced marijuana. We will make America SAFE again!”
Trump doubled down on his support in another Truth Social post made on Thursday.
“As I have previously stated, I believe it is time to end needless arrests and incarcerations of adults for small amounts of marijuana for personal use,” he stated in this post. “We must also implement smart regulations while providing access for adults to safe, tested products.”
“As a Floridian, I will be voting YES on Amendment 3 this November,” he declared. “As President, we will continue to focus on research to unlock the medical uses of marijuana to a Schedule 3 drug, and work with Congress to pass common-sense laws, including safe banking for state-authorized companies, and supporting states’ rights to pass marijuana laws, like in Florida, that work so well for their citizens.”
On November 7, 2023, Ohio became one of the 24 states in America to legalize recreational marijuana after a ballot measure was passed overwhelmingly.
The law passed with a 56.79% vote, letting adults over 21 carry up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana with a limit of six plants per person as well as 12 plants per resident.
