Former President Donald Trump‘s wife, Melania, like other former first ladies, paid tribute to former President Jimmy Carter‘s wife, Rosalynn, in the wake of her death at 96.

After the announcement of Rosalynn’s death, the Carter Center confirmed that she died peacefully at her home in Plains, Georgia, with her family by her side. Jimmy Carter has been under hospice care for several months.

In response to Rosalynn’s death, Donald Trump, who currently leads the race for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, expressed his condolences and praised Rosalynn Carter as a “great humanitarian” and a champion for mental health.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump posted a message that honored Rosalynn Carter, and stated, “Melania and I join all Americans in mourning the loss of Rosalynn Carter.”

He further acknowledged her contributions, such as her time as a U.S. Navy spouse, her role in the Georgia governor’s mansion, her tenure as first lady of the United States and her subsequent work at the Carter Center and volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity.

Trump emphasized her remarkable achievements and national service and concluded with sympathies for President Carter, the Carter family and the Plains, Georgia, community that she held dear.

The warm tribute from Trump led many on social media to question its authenticity, as it deviated from Trump’s usual social media language and displayed a lack of his typical grammatical errors.

Days before, Trump had mocked Jimmy Carter at a rally in Fort Dodge, Iowa, a day after Rosalynn had entered hospice care.

Trump said at the rally, “[Jimmy Carter is] the happiest person anywhere in this country right now… because his administration looked brilliant compared to these clowns,” while he criticized  President Joe Biden.

He posted an article about the comments on his Truth Social page several hours before the tribute to the former first lady.
