Peacock’s new documentary, Gary, explores the troubled life of former child actor Gary Coleman, known for his role in the 80s sitcom Diff’rent Strokes.
The doc chronicles Coleman’s rise to fame, his subsequent struggles and death in 2010 at age 42.
Born with a congenital kidney defect that stunted his growth, Coleman faced health challenges throughout his life. Despite undergoing a kidney transplant at age 5, he eventually lost both kidneys and required regular dialysis treatments.
Discovered by television producer Norman Lear at 8, Coleman quickly became famous for his comedic skills. However, his transition from child star to adult actor proved challenging, leading to periods of depression and financial troubles.
The documentary reveals Coleman’s dream of becoming a cop and a brief job as a security guard that ended in controversy. It also explores his strained relationship with ex-wife Shannon Price.
Coleman’s financial woes are a central focus of the doc. Former manager Dion Mial alleges that the actor’s childhood business team mismanaged his earnings, prompting Coleman to fire them and demand a full accounting of his finances.
The circumstances of Coleman’s death have also raised questions. On May 28, 2010, Price found Coleman unconscious on their kitchen floor. After calling 911, she allegedly refused to follow the operator’s instructions to revive him. Coleman died two days later after being taken off life support.
Friends express confusion over the decision to remove life support so quickly, noting that Coleman’s instructions specified a two-week waiting period. Several of his friends have raised suspicions about his death. Price asserts her innocence.
Coleman’s death was eventually ruled accidental.
In a recent interview, SNL star Molly Shannon revealed that she was relentlessly harassed by Coleman in his hotel room in 1987.
