Tom Ford admitted in an interview on The View Wednesday, that he has no plans to dress First Lady Melania Trump.
“I was asked to dress her quite a few years ago and I declined; she’s not necessarily my image,” Ford explained. “Even had Hillary won she shouldn’t be wearing my clothes, they’re too expensive. They’re not artificially expensive, it’s how much it costs to make these things. I think the First Lady has to relate to anybody.”
Ford’s statement comes just a few weeks after fellow fashion designer Sophie Theallet wrote an open letter encouraging her peers not to work with Melania Trump.
“A one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom, and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next First Lady,” Theallet wrote.
Theallet added that she has enjoyed working with First Lady Michelle Obama over the last eight years, and respects Obama’s values.
Obama was known to wear clothing from many new and young designers, including Jason Wu and Prabal Gurung.
