In the wake of the release of the recent album Standing Room Only, Tim McGraw says he probably would be dead if it weren’t for his wife, fellow country star Faith Hill.

“I guarantee you, had I not gotten married to Faith at 29 years old A, I probably would’ve ran my career into the ground, and B, I would’ve died already with my career into the ground, one or the other, and it wouldn’t have ever been where it’s at now,” McGraw said during an interview with Zane Lowe.

The two first met in 1994 and started dating in 1996, getting married that same year. McGraw and Hill have been married for 27 years and have three kids. Even with their successful careers, McGraw and Hill have always put their family first, which has helped their marriage.

According to McGraw, another way they managed to maintain their long-term relationship is through the early commitments they made to each other. The two decided that they were going to get married and have a family and that they wouldn’t end their marriage if problems in their relationship arose.

“We were both successful, and so when we got married and decided to have a family, we had had enough success at that time that we could pick and choose when we wanted to work and how we wanted to work,” McGraw explained to Lowe.

McGraw also went into more detail about his struggles with alcoholism, saying that Hill helped him with his 15-year battle with sobriety. He praised her for standing with him through the toughest of times. McGraw has been sober since 2008. He described their relationship as going through a “second honeymoon” phase.
