Talks to revive Last Man Standing have ended between network CMT and producer 20th Century Fox unable to reach a deal.
It appears the canceled ABC show will not return to the air. As of June 14, the Country Music Television network was in talks to pick up the canceled conservative family sitcom starring Tim Allen. It was canceled after 6 seasons on ABC, despite holding strong numbers through its run.
The multi-camera sitcom is, however, expensive to shoot and produce, so money has been an issue since its cancelation. The writers of the show have already scrambled to find new jobs for the next TV season, while the actors remain in contract through June. Once that contract is up, however, it would be extremely unlikely that a reboot would take place.
CMT would have been the most natural new home for the series, as it already airs syndicated reruns. The deal was still considered a long shot but not out of the question, given that the channel picked up ABC’s drama Nashville last year.
The initial cancelation of the show came as an unexpected shock to fans and the cast alike. Allen tweeted out that he had been “stunned” and “blindsided” by ABC’s decision. “Last Man Standing was a challenging one for me because it was a steady performer in the ratings, but once we made the decision not to continue with comedies on Fridays, that was where we landed,” said ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey last month.
