Robert De Niro’s ‘A Bronx Tale’ Interrupted By Attendee Holding Up “Trump 2020” Sign

On Saturday, an attendee at a Broadway performance of the musical A Bronx Tale held up a Trump 2020 banner that also read “Keep America Great,” presumably as a response to the show’s co-director Robert De Niro declaring “f— Trump” at the Tonys last Sunday.

This follows the president’s own response to the actor, who tweeted last week, “Robert De Niro, a very Low IQ individual, has received too many shots to the head by real boxers in movies. I watched him last night and truly believe he may be ‘punch-drunk.'”

The banner set off A Bronx Tale hair and makeup supervisor Brian Strumwasser, who noted (in a since-deleted Instagram post), “Whoever the low life scum bag who thinks it’s ok to post their political views at a Broadway show and disrespect everyone there who paid to watch a show that is ALL ABOUT INCLUSION was thankfully removed from the theater Saturday night.”

This incident follows other recent politically motivated statements at the theater. In November 2016, Hamilton cast member Brandon Victor Dixon called out Mike Pence during a performance that the then-vice president-elect was attending, and in June 2017, a protester interrupted a Shakespeare in the Park performance of Julius Caesar in which the title Roman leader was dressed like Trump.

A Bronx Tale was originally a one-man play starring Chazz Palminteri that debuted in 1989. The film version, directed by De Niro, opened in 1993, Palminteri revived the play in 2007 and the musical premiered in 2016.
