The Weeknd has finally dropped his long awaited EP My Dear Melancholy at midnight on Friday night.
The R&B singer has not made music since the end of 2016 when he released his successful album Starboy, however now he is back but this time with a more dark and morose tone.
The EP is filled with songs of heartbreak and pain, which can be attributed to The Weeknd’s past relationships with singer Selena Gomez and model Bella Hadid. As the title suggests, the six songs serve as a notes to himself to keep track of all the things he’d wished he said before the end of his relationships.

Each song on My Dear Melancholy, focuses on a different aspect of his failed relationships. “Call Out My Name” details how he struggles to let go of an old relationship. “Wasted Times” is the Weeknd admitting to his own faults throughout the relationship. “Privilege” is his criticism of her lifestyle. “I Was Never There” is about how he would constantly provoke her ego. In “Hurt You,” he sings about how relationships are detrimental to him, but he doesn’t want to hurt her. “Try Me” is the Weeknd’s attempt to convince a previous lover to leave her current partner for him.
The Weeknd credits a couple notable producers, including Daft Punk’s Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo and Skrillex. The EP only has one featured artist, French DJ Gesaffelstein, who has worked on collaborations with Kanye West and Lana Del Rey.

Fans have had a generally positive response to the EP’s release, many noting that it reminds them of his first mixtape House of Balloons. The Weeknd had originally gained fame for his sorrowful music, which he had strayed from in his newest albums. However, fans are glad he is going back towards his iconic music style.
