'The Rock' Dwayne Johnson Wins WWE Championship For First Time In 11 Years
Dwayne Johnson, known as The Rock to the wrestling world, reclaimed the WWE Championship on Sunday night's 26th annual Royal Rumble after an 11-year drought.
Johnson, 40, defeated CM Punk, 34, to win his eighth championship. It almost didn’t happen, as The Rock was blindsided by an attack from the wrestling triumvirate, The Shield. The lights in the US Airways Center in Phoenix, Ariz., went out and The Rock was knocked out of the ring in the darkness.
Punk dragged him into the ring for the winning pin, but WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, 67, announced that if there was any involvement by The Shield, Punk would be stripped of the title. The Rock cut McMahon off before he could finish. “You don’t take it from him. I am. Restart the match now,” The Rock said.
Other winners include John Cena, 35, who won the 30-superstar Royal Rumble match. Team Hell No defeated Team Rhodes Scholars to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. Alberto del Rio, 35, won the World Heavyweight Championship Last Man Standing Match by outlasting Big Show, 40. Antonio Cesaro, 32, won the United States Championship by defeating The Miz, 32.
