‘The Division’ Companion App Lets Tablet Users Become Drones

Tom Clancy’s The Division, a new game put out by Ubisoft, is an open-world action RPG set amidst a global pandemic that breaks out on Black Friday, a broken government and general chaos. While those playing the game on their PlayStation 4s and Xbox Ones will take on the roles of sleeper agents, those who log into the app become drones – to the benefit or detriment to the console players.

Tablet-users of The Division app will get an aerial view of game play and join up with a group of players on the ground, Ubisoft announced at the E3 2013 press conference, reported IGN. Along with the bird’s eye view, they’ll have access to a variety of skills to give to the players on ground zero – armor, healing, etc. They can also instigate violence by marking a player to get noticed by an enemy. Most dramatically, the app-user can send down an airstrike on whomever they desire.

Essentially, the companion app of The Division will offer another dimension to the gaming experience. Those with the app will be able to contribute to the game in a completely disengaged way; they’re not in it to win, and can be completely cavalier. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users will have to decide whether or not to trust the app users, who could either be a guardian angel or a troll out to sabotage.

The Division will be available on PSX and Xbox One in 2014
