Taylor Swift's 'Speak Now' Sells A Million
Not content with nabbing Jake Gyllenhaal, Taylor Swift just sold more records in a week than any artist in the past five years.
The country/pop singer's new album, Speak Now, sold 1,047,000 copies, the first since Lil' Wayne's Tha Carter III in 2008 to break the 1 million mark in its first week, and the most records sold since 50 Cent's 2005 album The Massacre. Swift barely missed the record for most albums sold in the first week by a female artist, held by Britney Spears for her Oops…I Did It Again in 2000. This is also the first million-album sales week for a country record since 1998, when Garth Brooks went platinum with Double Live.
Swift is now also one of only four female artists to ever move a million copies in the first week, joining Whitney Houston, Norah Jones and Spears. Early Billboard predictions believed she'd sell 800,000 to 900,000, but she has surpassed those estimates, and easily beat the second biggest release of the year, Eminem's Recovery, which sold 741,000. Swift also announced recently that she would be releasing her own line of fragrances through Elizabeth Arden. –AMY LEE
