Taylor Swift has come out the victor in the trial against David Mueller, the radio DJ who groped the pop star at a pre-concert fan meet-and-greet.
At first, it was Mueller who sued Swift because he lost in job after Swift’s team informed his employer, KYGO radio, of his actions. He sued the singer, her mother, and her radio promotions director Frank Bell for damages worth $3 million. Swift then countersued for a symbolic $1 and won.
The jury was made up of six women and two men, who also found Swift’s mother Andrea Swift not liable for tortious interference. After the verdict was read, Swift jumped up and hugged her mother.
Swift has explained that she didn’t go to trial for monetary gain, but to show that men can no longer get away with groping an innocent woman. She originally did not want to get the law involved, but once Mueller took his case to court, she knew she had to countersue. She hopes that her trial will “serve as an example to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating acts.”
Swift’s attorney, Doug Baldridge, said the ruling was “not just a win” but “something that can make a difference… It takes people like Taylor,” he continued, “who we all know, to stand up and draw these lines.”
“I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this,” Swift wrote in a statement following the verdict. “My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Therefore, I will be making donations in the near future to multiple organizations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves.”
