Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney defended her family after rumors began circulating from social media posts where her relatives and friends were wearing “Blue Lives Matter” shirts and MAGA hats, often sported by die-hard supporters of former President Donald Trump.
The actress spoke about the backlash she faced last August from photos of her family celebrating her mom’s 60th birthday.
Sweeney claimed that people were misinterpreting the photos, assuming that the Sweeney family were Trump supporters.
Sweeney’s brother had posted photos with the party guests wearing a red hat that reads “Make Sixty Great Again.” This is a reference to Trump’s slogan and the popular red hats. In an additional photo, a man was seen wearing a pro-police shirt.
Shortly after these photos were shared on social media, fans slammed the actress and her family for their attire. Sweeney shortly responded on X, formerly Twitter, telling people “You guys this is wild. An innocent celebration for my mom’s milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention. Please stop making assumptions. Much love to everyone ♥️ and Happy Birthday Mom!”
Sweeney recently explained that the people wearing the controversial hats and shirts were not a part of her family. She clarified that they were actually friends of her mom. “The people who brought the things that people were upset about were actually my mom’s friends from L.A. who have kids that are walking outside in the Pride parade, and they thought it would be funny to wear because they were coming to Idaho,” she told Variety.

The Euphoria star spoke about cancel culture and how the public and media intensely scrutinize stars like herself. “People are so fast to build someone up, and then they love tearing them down,” she added. “And it’s so fascinating to see. Three years ago, I was going to college just like everybody else. And all of a sudden, I’m not a human anymore.”
