Hip-hop mogul Marion “Suge” Knight has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 55-year-old man in Compton.

Suge Knight Charged With Murder

Knight surrendered to authorities Friday morning following the Thursday hit-and-run. He was subsequently interviewed by police for three hours and was held on $2 million bail. “Homicide detectives have arrested Marion ‘Suge’ Knight for murder,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Knight’s lawyer admits that his client was behind the wheel of the vehicle that hit and killed a 55-year-old man and injured a 51-year-old man. However, the lawyer, James Blatt, has maintained that Knight did not intentionally hit the two men, and was merely trying to escape an altercation.

“We are confident that once the investigation is completed, he will be totally exonerated,” Blatt said. “He was in the process of being physically assaulted by two men and in an effort to escape he unfortunately hit two [other] individuals. He was in his car trying to escape.”

Despite Blatt’s claims, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. John Corina has said that witnesses’ accounts of the incident tell a different story. “The people we talked to say it looked like it was an intentional act,” Corina told reporters, adding Knight was known to have had a pair of arguments with the men who were hit.

The two men were reportedly at a promotional shoot for the Straight Outta Compton biopic with Knight, the Game, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Afterwards, Knight followed the two unidentified men to a nearby parking lot, where he allegedly ran over the victims. “Looks like he drove backwards and struck the victims and drove forwards and struck them again,” Corina said.

Knight has had a number of run-ins with the law during his career – from a 9-year prison stint for violating probation on an assault charge in 1997 to a robbery charge last October for stealing a photographer’s camera. He’s also been on the receiving end of violence, most recently getting shot six times in August at an MTV VMA pre-party.
