Los Angeles street artist known as Plastic Jesus erected a mold of Harvey Weinstein in a silk robe sitting on a couch with the title “Casting Couch” ahead of Sunday’s Academy Awards.
Plastic Jesus and his partner Joshua Monroe placed the statue on Hollywood Boulevard within walking distance from the Dolby Theater, where the show will take place on March 4. In it, the golden Weinstein is donning a silk robe and real slippers, and the couch sits atop a red carpet. The disgraced producer is holding an Oscar statue in front of his crotch, simulating an erect penis.
The casting couch is the idea that women, and some men, are expected to perform sexual favors for those in a position of power in order to be cast in a role. It can translated to work with any industry.
“For the past 4 years I have created an alternative Oscars statue to highlight issues that often go unnoticed in the glitz and glamor of Hollywood, these have included drug addiction, hero worship and exploitation,” reads a message on the artist’s GoFundMe website.
Last year, Plastic Jesus created a piece called the “Crucifixion of Kanye West,” which saw the rapper as a gold statue with arms outstretched and a crown of thorns on his head. The words “False Idol” were written beneath the statue.
Weinstein has faced numerous allegations of sexual harassment and assault, starting when the New York Times detailed eight accusations. Many actresses followed suit, and his number of accusers has grown to more than 100.
