‘Stranger Things’ Fourth Season Spoiled By Monopoly Tie-In, Duffer Brothers Have ‘Meltdown’

WARNING: Spoilers for moments of Stranger Things season 4 ahead.

Fans of Stranger Things who decided to buy their new Monopoly board game set got way more than they bargained for: plot spoilers of moments from the Netflix show’s fourth season. The season is supposed to premiere its first half on May 27, but images from the currently-available Monopoly game actually reveal elements of the plot.

One part of the board, shared by a Twitter user last month, mentions that “Eleven agrees to travel to a secret laboratory in the desert to get her superhuman powers back,” which was shocking for some fans who thought that Eleven would only go along unwillingly.

The creators of the smash science fiction Netflix series, The Duffer Brothers, take plot secrecy very seriously and had a “total meltdown” when news of the Monopoly game reached them. The brothers reportedly weren’t even consulted while the game was made, which definitely could have stopped this mistake from ever happening.

A source close to the production said that the pure size and scale that the Stranger Things series has reached is likely the reason why the Monopoly error took place.

This is the official description of season 4, which the Duffer Brothers actually want you to know. “It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.”

Here’s the official trailer for Stranger Things season four. Volume one of the season will premiere in May, and Volume two will come a little later on July 1.
