The 2019 Miss Universe Pageant had people yet again criticizing host Steve Harvey on more than one occasion this time. In a confusing and since corrected twist in the National Costume category, Harvey did in fact have the correct winner, although at the time Miss Malaysia Shweta Sekhon was crowned the real winner. Harvey announced the winner as Miss Philippines Gazini Ganados, however, Sekhon was on stage and took to the mic to correct Harvey. “It’s not Philippines, it’s Malaysia,” she said.

Harvey jumped to his defense to knock the producers for the mistake. “Well, let me explain something, I just read that in the teleprompter. Y’all gotta quit doin’ this to me. I can read! They are trying to fix it now, but this is what they did to me back in 2015,” he said.

The mistake has since been corrected and a tweet congratulating the real winner has been posted.

The infamous 2015 incident came when Harvey announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner of the pageant, however, the real winner was Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. Social media blew up and ESPN’S Darren Rovell was quoted as saying it was “the worst mistake in TV awards show history.”

The 62-year-old comic also came under fire for a controversial comment he made towards Miss Colombia Gabriela Tafur. He joked about the infamous 2015 mistake, and she said he was “forgiven.” Harvey then went on to say, “You’ve forgiven me [but] the cartel has not. They’re not handling it the same way.”

Harvey, known for his off-the-cuff remarks immediately had social media in a frenzy calling his joke offensive and inappropriate.

This was Harvey’s fifth year in a row hosting the pageant and it was certainly entertaining not for lack of trying.
