NEW YORK, NY - NOVEMBER 24: The Spongebob SquarePants balloon floats down 6th Av, during the 90th Macy's Annual Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 24, 2016 in New York City. Security was tight in New York City on Thursday for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade after ISIS called supporters in the West to use rented trucks in attacks as similar as the ones operated in France this summer where at least 86 people were killed.
Kid’s cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants is coming to Broadway this fall.
After a critically acclaimed run in Chicago in summer 2016, the musical will be arriving on Broadway at the Palace Theatre, with previews beginning Nov. 6, and opening night Dec. 4. “We could not be more thrilled to bring Nickelodeon’s iconic SpongeBob SquarePants to the theater in an original musical conceived specifically for Broadway,” said Nickelodeon Group president Cyma Zarghami. “We are also incredibly honored to be in such a gorgeous house as The Palace, where audiences will be immersed in the fun and surprising world of Bikini Bottom.”
The cast will include Ethan Slater as SpongeBob, Gavin Lee as Squidward Tentacles, Lilli Cooper as Sandy Cheeks, and Danny Skinner as Patrick Star. Tina Landau will direct, and the show will bring in designers from Fun Home and Spring Awakening. The original score will be created by legends such as Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Sara Bareilles, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, and T.I., and will feature a song by David Bowie.
“We are very happy to welcome Nickelodeon and SpongeBob SquarePants to Broadway,” said James L. Nederlander, president of the Nederlander Organization. “The Palace is the perfect size and scale for this new musical, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to open our doors to it.”
