‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Snubbed For Best Picture Oscar Nomination

Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home did not make the list of 2022 Oscar nominations for Best Picture on Tuesday.

Despite being the top film of 2021 that earned nearly $1.8 billion in the worldwide box office (making it the sixth highest-grossing movie ever) bringing three generations of Spider-Man fans together to appreciate and enjoy one big blockbuster, it was only nominated for Best Visual Effects along with Marvel’s other 2021 feature, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Hollywood is believed to have a bias against superhero movies – Black Panther has been the only comic movie ever so far to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

No Way Home was a cultural reset for having Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire reprise their respective Peter Parker/Spider-Man roles to aid fellow Spidey (Tom Holland) in “fixing” the villains that Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) accidentally brought in from alternate realities with his spell as well as help Holland’s Spider-Man cope with the loss of his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei).

Meanwhile, Garfield, The Amazing Spider-Man star, was nominated an Oscar this year for Best Actor for his leading role in Netflix’s tick, tick…BOOM!.

The host for this year’s Oscars has not yet been announced. The televised ceremony will air on March 27 at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST on ABC.
