Southside With You, which is currently in production in Chicago, is set on the date in 1989 when President Obama took out lawyer Michelle Robinson for the first time. The first date between the first couple spanned a full afternoon and evening, taking them from the Art Institute of Chicago, to a screening of Spike Lee‘s Do the Right Thing, and finally to an ice cream parlor, outside of which they shared their first kiss.
Talking about the date last summer, the first lady said, “He was trying to show me his sophisticated side by selecting an independent filmmaker, and it ended up being a pretty good movie — really great!”
President Obama added, “Spike, thank you for helping me impress Michelle, and thank you for telling a powerful story.”
Richard Tanne both penned the screenplay and is making his directorial debut with Southside with You, which is backed by independent studio IM Global. Bob Teital is producing the film for State Street Pictures.
