During Saturday’s premiere of the 47th season of Saturday Night Live (SNL), anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che paid tribute to the late Norm Macdonald. The last few minutes of the episode’s Weekend Update were dedicated to a compilation of the comedian’s best moments, including clips of Macdonald hosting Weekend Update himself and jokes centering around Bill Clinton. Jost also mentioned that Macdonald was “the reason that I ever wanted to do Weekend Update.”
Macdonald was a cast member at SNL for five years from 1993-1998. He departed the show in 1998 after jabs at O.J. Simpson and his murder trial. After SNL, Macdonald worked on personal projects including writing and costarring in the movie Dirty Work, debuting his own show Norm and making many guest appearances on late-night shows. In his memoir, Based on a True Story: A Memoir, Macdonald said, “I’ve been lucky. If I had to sum up my whole life, I guess those are the words I would choose, all right.”
