Singer CoCo Lee has died by suicide at 48 years old. 

Her death has been announced by her older sister Nancy Lee on Facebook on Wednesday.

Her sister explained that CoCo had attempted suicide and was brought to the hospital after being found in her home. She was put in a coma until she died on Wednesday. 

Nancy wrote, “CoCo had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months. Although, CoCo sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her.”

In addition to this statement, Nancy posted a video with pictures of CoCo with her friends and family while she was growing up.

CoCo, a singer and songwriter, was best known for voicing Mulan in the Chinese version of Disney’s animated movie Mulan. In addition to this, she also sang the song “Reflection” from the same movie. 

CoCo was born in Hong Kong and moved to the U.S. when she was nine. She later returned to Hong Kong where she attended school and began her career in music.

She had an extremely successful career in Asia and was known as a famous pop singer from the 1990s to the 2000s. 

Her sister added in the post that, “CoCo is also known to have worked tirelessly to open up a new world for Chinese singers in the international music scene, and she went all out to shine for the Chinese.” 

She was the first Chinese American singer to perform live at the Oscars where she sang “A Love Before Time” from the album Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon by Ang Lee

CoCo was married to Bruce Rockowitz, a businessman and former CEO of Li & Fung, since 2011. She was a stepmother to Rockowitz’s two daughters.
