Sinead O’Connor Changes Name To Magda Davitt, Says Her Mother Sexually Assaulted Her As A Child

Sinead O’Connor, 50, told Dr. Phil in a recent interview that her mother sexually abused her as a child and ran a torture chamber of sorts in her childhood home.

The Irish singer was speaking to the television host about her mental health after fans grew worried after she posted an emotional video in which she revealed she has been suicidal. “She ran a torture chamber. She was a person who took delight in hurting you,” O’Connor said of her mother Marie, who died in a car crash when the singer was 19-years-old.

She recently changed her name to Magda Davitt to be “free of parental curses.” “Inspired by African Americans who did not want the slave name, I don’t want the patriarchal name,” she wrote on Facebook with her name change. “For those who are hurt by people slagging me off off for name change… f–k ’em all. Who cares what anyone says or thinks? Those who love me will call me Magda. Those who continue to call me Sinead are uneducated fools. Of the kind who would refer to transgender folks as being the gender they were before they changed. No one values those kind of fools. So don’t give them a second’s mind. Who calls me Magda I hear. Who calls me Sinead, I ignore. Sinead is dead. And a happier woman has been born. Free of the patriarchal slave names. Free of the parental curses.”

During her talk with Dr. Phil, Davitt revealed that her mother also tried to damage her reproductive organs, and said that the hysterectomy she underwent two years ago changed her mental state. “What kicked all of this off was I had a hysterectomy, a radical hysterectomy, in Ireland two years ago, and I lost my mind after that,” she said. “I was told to leave the hospital two days after that with Tylenol and no hormone replacements, and no guidance of what might happen to me. I was flung into surgical menopause and I became suicidal, I was a basket case. Also, in some of my abuse as a child, my mother quite regularly was attempting to destroy my reproductive system, so the surgery was very triggering.”

The 50-year-old singer has four children from different relationships, and is upset that one of the fathers refuses to let her see her youngest child. “I rang one of the fathers of my children, who happened to be five miles away from me in New York at the time with my ten-year-old child and wouldn’t bring him to see me,” she said. “Obviously I want to be really careful because I love my family and I don’t blame them. It’s not easy for families of mentally ill people, we can be difficult. I don’t want to make out like I’m a victim here, I gave as good as I got. I was an asshole to my family.”

Davitt admitted to Dr. Phil that she has tried to commit suicide eight times in the past year. “Look, I’m in trouble. I need help,” she said. “I want to de-stigmatize mental illness; I clearly have a problem… Too many musicians are dying. I want to use my life, be a teaching tool. I’m willing to sit down and talk.”

The singer later thanked Dr. Phil for speaking with her on his show. “You really are not quite human you know. You’re a proper real live angel,” she wrote on Facebook. “I knew that from the gold in your eyes. And from the size of your huge heart. One day I hope to be an angel too. I promise I won’t let you down.” She then added that, “I’m gonna go off radar for two weeks.”
