Simon Cowell Hits Golden Buzzer For Cancer Survivor Calysta Bevier On ‘America’s Got Talent’
Calysta Bevier, 16, got the Golden Buzzer from returning judge Simon Cowell on America’s Got Talent Tuesday night.
After judge Howie Mandel said, “I like the whole look. It’s like a little Audrey Hepburn,” Bevier informed the audience that her short hair cut was not her choice but was due to chemotherapy. She is a survivor of stage 3 ovarian cancer.
“I kinda came here today to show people no matter what you’ve gone through to keep chasing your dreams,” she told the judges. Bevier then performed “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten.
Bevier received a standing ovation and kind words from Cowell. “Calysta, I love everything about you,” he said, “I just had this feeling when you walked out – I just can’t explain it.”
“Sorry I’ve got to do this,” Cowell proclaimed before pressing the Golden Buzzer sending Bevier straight through to the live shows at Radio City Music Hall.
On season 11 of NBC’s America’s Got Talent, Mel B was the first to press the Golden Buzzer for 13-year-old opera singer Laura Bretan. Mandel was the second, pressing it for 12-year-old singer and ukulelist Grace VanderWaal. Heidi Klum then pressed the Golden Buzzer for 20-year-old jazz singer Sal Valentinetti. After Cowell used his opportunity to press the Buzzer, he left host Nick Cannon to be the last of the bunch – he has yet to use the Golden Buzzer this season.
