UFC heavyweight fighter Shane del Rosario died on Monday, 13 days after he suffered a cardiac arrest.
Shane Del Rosario Dies
Del Rosario was first hospitalized on Nov. 26 after his cardiac collapse, and managed to be resuscitated. He remained on life support for three days until Nov. 29. Del Rosario inexplicably remained alive for 10 days after he was taken off light support. On Monday, he was pronounced dead.
Ian McCall, a friend, roommate and teammate of del Rosario, was the one who found him following his heart attack, which doctors believe was due to a congenital heart disorder. Following the news of his death, McCall took to Instagram to remember his late pal.
The UFC released an official statement to express the organization’s sorrow at the loss of the del Rosario: “The Ultimate Fighting Championship mourns the tragic loss of heavyweight competitor Shane Del Rosario, who has passed away at the age of 30.… The entire organization sends its deepest condolences to Shane’s family and friends.”
After getting struck by a drunk driver back in 2011, del Rosario had been working towards getting back to his top form in the UFC ring. He'd suffered two losses following an 11-match win streak in his two bouts following the accident. Prior to his heart attack, he’d sustained a rib injury that forced him to drop out of the UFC 168 pay-per-view event that was scheduled to take place Dec. 28, 2013.
