Scott Stapp, Creed Frontman, Reveals Bi-Polar Disorder, Newfound Sobriety

Scott Stapp, the Creed frontman, recently found out that he’s been battling bipolar disorder after suffering a psychotic break.

Back in November of last year, Stapp made headlines after releasing a video in which he claimed that he was broke and under attack. He made headlines once again in December when a 911 call placed by his wife leaked. In the recording, his wife Jaclyn can be heard telling a dispatcher that Stapp thought he was in the CIA and that he was ordered to assassinate President Barack Obama.

“I’m lucky to be alive,” Stapp told People. “I had a psychotic break that was brought on by alcohol and drug abuse. I was hallucinating. I drove around the United States for a month, following an angel that I saw on the hood of my car.”

“In my delusional thinking, I thought my family was involved in ISIS, and that millions of dollars had been taken from me to support terrorism,” he added. “All of it was nonsense. I was out of my mind.”

Finally, after hitting rock bottom, Stapp agreed to participate in an intensive program in which he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Though initially the musician found it difficult to swallow the diagnosis, it eventually gave him and his family some solace.

“It was hard to process,” he says. “There’s a stigma associated with it. But Jaclyn kept telling me, ‘Embrace it. We love you.’ It became a big sign of relief, because finally, we had an answer.”

Stapp is now sober and in a 12-step program with a sponsor. He’s also in intensive therapy for his bipolar disorder and taking medication.
